I first watched the Tetsuwan Birdy OVA sometime in the late 1999s, though I no longer remember how I originally got a hold of the episodes... someone gave fansubbed copies to me, I think. I enjoyed the show immensely, and I can say Birdy was one of my first anime crushes.
Every since I started collecting cels I've wanted a nice one of her, but while they occasionally pop up these days, they're usually not nice enough. I came across this unlabeled genga at cel shop in Tokyo in January 2017 and knew immediately what it was. I don't usually buy genga, but it was such a nice, clear shot of Birdy's full body that I had to have it.
This scene is from the final showdown in episode four. Birdy is getting knocked around, by powerful magic, but is determined not to lose.
The genga is pretty rough with age, wrinkled and folded, not to mention the original was taped together to extend the drawing. I don't care, the lines are so good. It's much more beautiful than the screencap. It also came with a photocopy of the scene with Birdy and the structure she's flung into colored orange. This helps set the scene and shows that it's pan (which seems obviously, but isn't labeled on the genga), as well as giving us some additional information. All in all, a great pair. Sure, I wish I had the cel, too. But this makes me pretty happy.
