I first discovered Ranma 1/2 in 1995 or 1996. It was virtually unheard of in the US and only the first season and some OVAs had been released on very expensive VHS tapes. I remember, however, hearing about this mystical character called Pantyhose Taro who transformed into some sort of Jusenkyou demon-beast. I remember how excited and amazed I was when I found some very grainy screencaps and manga scans of the actual character. It felt surreal and magical to have found this character without ever seeing an episode with him in it, or read a page of the manga with him.
These days you can easily see the whole series in high definition DVD quality, or read the manga online. The character isn't even particularly memorable, and in the anime he's only in a single two-part serial. In my head, though, he was built up as Ranma's ultimate foe. I thought his character design was so awesome. I'd even made a little mini internet shrine to him, long before I'd ever seen in him action!
It is for all those nostalgia reasons that I bought this cel the moment I saw it. He was once so elusive and magical to me, and now I actually own a piece of the actual anime he was aired from. His eye looks a little wonky, but otherwise I am thrilled to have such a nice shot of him, holding his bo-staff. This comes from The Demon from Jusenkyo, Part 2 (呪泉郷から来た悪魔 前編) during a battle on a waterfall cliff between Pantyhose Taro and Ranma.
It came with a matching douga, though it was damaged at some point.
