This wonderful cel is from the Ranma 1/2 DoCo music video "Owaranai Natsuyasumi" (終わらない夏休み / Neverending Summer Vacation). Although it's a group song, the music video is all about Nabiki and a romance she has over the summer with a mysterious, unknown man. There are quite a few beautiful cels from this music video I'd like to get my hands on, including an onsen one and a cute bathing suit or two.
This cel is from near the end of the music video, as Nabiki is riding the country train back from her summer vacation--alone. She is looking out the window at a field of sunflowers when a boy hands her an orange. She is surprised by this, realizing she's actually alone, and drops the orange. Maybe summer, and her summer love, never actually happened at all...
This cel is really interesting because the entire train, the suitcase, the hat, Nabiki, etc is painted onto the same layer. That everything is painted is surprising in of itself, but the fact that it's only one layer is pretty crazy. It's just one big sheet of paint. But it really makes it stand out as a work of art over the more traditional multiple layered cels. When you watch the music video, you can see how the scene does a very dynamic moving pan-out, which is probably what necessitated painting this sequence this way.
Unfortunately, it didn't come with douga, genga or layout to give more clues to how it was filmed, and no background because I'm not sure there ever was any background.
Thanks again very much to Marie from Hoodies and Raindrops for parting with this cel for me! It's a real treasure to add to my Nabiki gallery. Hopefully someday I can get a higher quality screencap.
