In episode four, Merle arrives at Astoria where she is reunited with Van. She tells him about the destruction of Fanelia before falling unconscious in his arms. Hitomi has a vision of flames after hearing from Merle that Fanelia burned, and she too passes out. Allen orders Van to take Merle into the castle, and here he stands lifting her in his arms.
The rest of the cels from this sequence feature a fairly neutral face on Van, but this particular one has a fierce, almost angry expression, which I quite like. He's so angry that his country has been attacked, his people killed, and Merle almost lost, and I feel this frame really displays that. It's a key frame as well, so I like to believe that's why.
It's also a very large vertical pan cel to follow him as he moves from a crouch to a stand, though I have cropped it to display more landscaped. The matching douga shows the actual dimensions.
